HELENSBURGH ASTRONOMICAL SOCIETY

report of meeting

At the April 2005 meeting of the Society, Dr Philip Best of Edinburgh University gave a most interesting presentation on Clusters of galaxies.  While most folk will know about galaxies probably few know that they tend to come in groups or clusters.

Our Milky Way galaxy is part of the so-called Local Group, which is part of the Virgo Cluster comprising several hundred galaxies. Studying these clusters gives new insights into the nature and history of the Universe, in particular the rate of formation of stars and galaxies.
