history

This society held its first meeting in it's current meeting place in September 2002. Meetings were held monthly through until April with a dinner being held prior to the December meeting at which members met that evening's speaker, Professor John C. Brown , the Astronomer Royal for Scotland. In addition to a monthly meeting members enjoyed access to the telescope of Glasgow University's Department of Physics and Astronomy. During the year 2003-04 this was increased to twice per month in some months.

The Society held it's first AGM in August 2003, at which the Constitution was approved. Andrew A. Leven was elected Chairman, A. Campbell Dun was elected Secretary/Treasurer and Allan S. Carrie was elected to the Committee as an Ordinary member.

The Society's founder and current Chairman is Andrew A. Leven, whose contacts have been useful in benefiting the society with an interesting and varied supply of speakers. The topics provided by the speakers have proven to be of interest to amateur astronomers of all levels.

During the 2003-04 session the Society saw a start of another of it's main aims. The promotion of Astronomy in the Community with a presentation to Hermitage Academy at the end on the Summer term.  Also the Society started on one or two  practical projects.

Since then there have been presentation to a number of local schools. These have been Rhu Primary, Kilcreggan Primary, St Joseph's Primar, Hemitage Porimary and Luss Primary schools. They featured one of the talks by Andrew called 'Dwarfs and Giants. Also available were a couple of telescopes which were explained.

In 2006 the Society was fortunate was successful in being granted Scottich Charity status (no.SC 037113).The club intends to develop its education and community outreach programme further.
